You are hanging out, sleeping over, fooling around, or waking up the next morning.
There is blood.
She realizes what happened and looks mortified.
Your next ten seconds can make the situation either completely normal or unforgettable for the wrong reason.
Your face matters more than your speech
You do not need a TED Talk about menstruation.
You mainly need to avoid looking like somebody discovered a dead animal under the sheets.
Try:
That sentence does a lot of work.
Blood on fabric is a laundry problem
Not a moral event.
Get a towel. Change the sheets. Follow whatever laundry instructions make sense for the fabric.
Do not stand there making repeated comments about the amount, smell, color, or visual experience.
She may be embarrassed even if you are not
Many women grow up learning to hide evidence of menstruation aggressively.
So your calm reaction can matter more than you realize.
Do not tease her unless you already have the kind of relationship where both people genuinely find that funny.
Do not assume what she wants physically
Some people feel completely normal on their periods. Others have cramps, fatigue, headaches, nausea, or simply do not want sexual activity.
Ask.
The rule does not change because menstruation entered the room.
If sex is on the table
Menstruation does not automatically make consensual adult sexual activity unsafe, but pregnancy and STI considerations do not disappear. Barrier protection can still matter.
And if either person does not want period sex, that is the end of the question.
Do not treat menstruation as secret female knowledge
You are allowed to know basic facts about bodies you do not have.
You do not need to be able to lecture on endocrinology. Knowing that cramps, fatigue, bleeding, and cycle variation exist is enough to prevent acting shocked when ordinary biology appears in your relationship.
What if she needs supplies?
If she asks you to grab pads, tampons, pain relief she normally uses, clean underwear, or something else practical, you do not lose masculinity by walking into a pharmacy.
If you are unsure which product, ask for the brand/type or take a photo of the package she wants.
This is a logistics task, not a rite of passage.
Do not announce the accident later
If blood got on your sheets, that is not automatically a funny story for your friends.
People are especially vulnerable around bodily accidents. Treating the moment as private is one easy way to show that you are safe to be imperfect around.
That applies to periods, sex, illness, vomiting, bathroom emergencies, and the whole unglamorous rest of having a body.
The bottom line
The mature response to ordinary body functions is ordinary calm.
You do not have to love blood. You just do not have to make someone feel ashamed for having a menstrual cycle.
