A COMPLIMENT CAN STILL BE PRIVATE

Someone Told Everyone You Have a Big Dick. Why Can That Still Feel Like a Privacy Violation?

“But it was a good thing” does not magically turn intimate information into public property.

The direct answer

You are allowed to be flattered and annoyed at the same time. Sharing intimate information about somebody without permission can cross a boundary even when the information is complimentary.

Somebody tells you the group knows.

Maybe your ex said something. Maybe a hookup told her friends. Maybe a friend saw you changing and passed the information along.

The immediate reaction can be confusing because the gossip is technically flattering.

Positive gossip is still gossip

The relevant question is not whether the information makes you look good. It is whether it was theirs to distribute.

People understand this instantly with other private facts. A flattering medical result is still medical information. A large salary is still financial information. Intimate anatomy can be positive and private simultaneously.

You do not have to perform either pride or outrage

You might secretly enjoy that people know. You might hate it. You might enjoy the compliment but dislike the loss of control. All are coherent reactions.

Decide what you actually want next

If you want the person to stop sharing, say exactly that. You do not need to demand that everybody erase their memory.

Useful line

“I’m not ashamed of it. I just don’t want you discussing my body with other people.”

The bottom line

A compliment does not stop being private just because most people would consider it flattering.
