ASKING IS NOT A BEGINNER MOVE

Stop Trying to Seem Experienced

Pretending to know what a partner wants creates more pressure than admitting you are learning. Good sexual partners ask, notice and adjust.

You are worried a partner will discover you do not have much sexual experience.

So you decide to conceal it by behaving like someone who never needs information.

You never ask what they like. You never admit uncertainty. You imitate something you saw. You keep going when feedback is unclear because stopping would look inexperienced.

This is backwards.

The short answer

Experience does not give anyone universal knowledge of another person’s body.

Sexual communication research consistently links better communication with higher sexual and relationship satisfaction. The useful skill is not pretending to know. It is being able to find out.

Every new partner makes you a beginner again

You may know how one former partner liked to be touched.

That does not tell you exactly what the next person wants.

Different bodies, preferences, sensitivities, boundaries, moods and contexts mean that some amount of learning happens every time people become intimate with someone new.

The experienced person who refuses feedback can be worse at this than the beginner who listens.

Questions can sound normal

You do not need to narrate everything like a medical procedure.

“Like that?”

“Slower?”

“Want me to keep going?”

“Show me.”

Those are not beginner sentences. They are partner sentences.

Feedback is information, not humiliation

If someone says “lighter” and your brain hears “you are terrible at sex,” you now have two problems.

The first was easy: change pressure.

The second is making the other person manage your wounded identity before they can ask for what feels good.

Try:

“Got it.”

Then adjust.

Porn confidence is not necessarily sexual confidence

Produced sex is designed to be watched.

Real intimacy is designed to be experienced by the people involved.

Those goals create very different behavior.

A dramatic move that looks obvious on camera may feel uncomfortable, unnecessary or ridiculous to an actual partner. The only reliable feedback comes from the person who is there with you.

The bottom line

The goal is not to make someone believe you have done everything before.

The goal is to make them feel safe telling you the truth about what they want now.
