The Girl You Like Has Insecurities Too
Attractive women are not immune to body image pressure, awkwardness or fear of rejection. Remembering that can make dating feel much more human.
When you are insecure around someone you find attractive, your imagination may turn her into a completely different species.
She is perfectly confident.
She never worries about how she looks.
She always knows what to say.
She has unlimited romantic options.
She can detect your flaws instantly.
You have accidentally promoted a stranger to Supreme Court justice of your entire self-worth.
Women experience body-image pressure, social comparison, rejection anxiety and self-consciousness too. Research on social media and body image finds substantial appearance pressure among young women and also shows that these pressures affect young men in somewhat different ways.
This is not a competition over who has it worse.
It is a reminder that the person across from you has an internal life you cannot see.
Attractive does not mean invulnerable
You cannot diagnose confidence from a face.
Someone can receive compliments constantly and still obsess over one feature. Someone can have many people interested in them and still care enormously about whether you like them. Someone can look calm and be replaying their own sentences afterward.
The same liking-gap research that applies to you applies to other people too.
This is not a trick for making women seem less intimidating
Do not cope by imagining that she secretly hates herself.
That is just another fantasy.
The useful thought is simpler:
I do not know exactly how she feels about herself. She is having a human experience too.
Mutual nervousness can look like distance
Two people can both be interested and both be protecting themselves.
You wait for a sign because you are afraid of rejection.
She waits for a sign because she is afraid of rejection.
Nothing happens.
This is one reason small, clear bids are healthier than trying to achieve certainty from body language alone.
The bottom line
The woman you like is not standing outside humanity evaluating whether you qualify for admission.
She has a body, a history, preferences, fears, blind spots and insecurities too.
Attraction gets less terrifying when you remember there are two vulnerable people in the room, not one applicant and one judge.
